    Health, Assistance & Nursing – 5825

    This full-time 1800-hour program is offered at our centre in Shawville.

    Program Objectives

    This program prepares students to practise the profession of Nursing Assistant. The program goals are:

    • to acquire the knowledge, ability and attitude necessary to differentiate between health and illness;
    • to acquire the knowledge and ability to understand and apply the techniques learned;
    • to establish a helping role with those with health needs;
    • to engage in team work within the modern health organization;
    • to communicate effectively with patients and their family, with superiors and with other health team members.

    Employment Perspectives

    Program graduates find employment in long-term care facilities, general care and specialized care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, private establishments such as long-term care and clinics as well as health and social service centres.

    Diploma

    Completion of this program leads to a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) from Quebec’s Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur.

    • Secondary 5 English
    • Secondary 4 French
    • Secondary 4 Math

    or

    • GDT (General Development Test)
    • Secondary 5 English

    Note that Secondary 5 French is required for a nursing license in Quebec.

    Conditions of Admission

    To be eligible for admission to the Health, Assistance and Nursing program, candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Persons holding a Secondary School Diploma or its recognized equivalent, for example, an Attestation of Equivalence of Secondary V studies, or a postsecondary diploma such as the Diploma of College Studies or a Bachelor’s degree, or;
    • Persons who are at least 16 years of age on September 30 of the school year in which their training is to begin and have earned the Secondary V credits in language of instruction and Secondary IV credits in second language and mathematics in the programs of study established by the Minister, or have been granted recognition for equivalent learning, or;
    • Persons who are at least 18 years of age upon entry into the program and have the following functional prerequisites: the successful completion of the General Development Test, as well as Secondary V credits in language of instruction in a program of study established by the Minister, or recognition for equivalent learning, or;
    • Persons having earned Secondary III credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in the programs of study established by the Minister and who will continue their general education courses concurrently with their vocational training in order to obtain the credits they are missing from among the following: Secondary IV and V language of instruction and Secondary IV second language and mathematics in the programs of study established by the Minister.
